To preface my super lengthy blog... I spent so much time responding to a friends blog tonight... that I didnt write my own. I figured might as well share the info I wrote... and keep a forum open on it. My friend wrote about her questioning the whole organic craze and the dogmatic moms that are out there to make you feel less than if you aren't spending a fortune on groceries... while she has some great points... and i enjoyed reading her blog very much... it got me fired up... and I had to share..
here is what i wrote::::
Uh -oh...
You probably wont like me after this comment. I only shop at Whole Foods and Everything I buy is organic. Why? Well def not because we are high rollers....In fact we are sooooooo the opposite… I am heavily against “ over- consumerism” and wastefulness.
Doctors do not study very much nutrition in school...they study medicine... and that’s after the damage has been done to ones body... they don’t instill " preventive medicine"... which is food and the factors that CAUSE disease. They diagnose. I don’t trust Doctors when it comes to what I eat at all. Pharmaceutical companies who want to make money prey off of people who get an un-curable disease... and the Doctor knows and learns all about the medicine they can put you on once the damage is done. There is a saying and it goes like” Once you fall off the ten story building, rose hips will not do much good.
Now do I trust a doctor if I need knee surgery. You bet. Because I know they studied years and years on the subject... but if you ask any doctor who is honest, they will tell you they don’t learn only but a few semesters of basic nutrition... I have friends in the field and they all confirm to me that… nutrition is not their specialty… fixing what is broken is… not keeping the working things working.
Because of the pasteurization process (which is not natural by the way) so unless you have a cow in your backyard and you milk him… it’s NOT natural. Cows milk after being pasteurized lacks the enzyme lactase that helps your body break down lactose. That’s why most people are allergic and can’t digest it well even if there are no visible signs of allergies... That’s even the organic kind… but the non organic milk is made from cows who are not monitored in the way they are fed… and are loaded with hormones so that the cow will produce more milk. Its actually animal cruelty at its worst and is so far from natural. And inhumane. If you are going to buy milk. I would opt for the organic variety… or else you will be getting hormones.
It doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to eat organic food... you just have to shop smart... we don’t buy tons of filler snacks and juices with lots of sugar... we eat the basics... and very natural. And it has totally wiped out my severe allergies I had as a child growing up... I had to use steroid eye drops and I was injected with crap each week. I had severe allergies... and I know from experience that eating organic is not a farce. Or hype… for it changed my life. And I can feel the huge difference. I don’t even get seasonal allergies anymore. And I live in Texas… the allergy capital. They like to call it… because of all the cedar and ragweed. Crazy. How food really is nature’s medicine.
I am going to school for holistic medicine and have read many a book about how screwed up the FDA is. The food pyramid is a farce. The beef and milk industry have a lot of money and the big wigs pay off the people who write it up... one of the authors, Luise Light of "what to eat" was a food pyramid nutritionist... quit her job after she was wined and dined by the milk and beef industries trying to get more of their servings on the guideline. She knew it wasn’t right… and she knew based on what she studied that we don’t need milk at all only as a young baby.. Or better breast milk. And beef was the one of the main causes of colon cancer and other degenerative diseases.
A good Movie to watch. Would be “ The future of Food”. You can netflix it.
It is very informative about American farming.
Pesticides are not sprayed gently on our crops these days like the were years ago. The crops just like our bodies build immunity to something over a period of time and require a heavier strength (just our bodies do with like antibiotics). These days food is not sprayed, it is genetically modified… and DNA spliced. Using cells from other foods to create other foods… and in this splicing is the chemicals… there is no way to wash it off. No way to eat around it… its in the seed… before the crop grows.
Our family, we are not dogmatic about it.... sure we eat out at restaurants, we enjoy a nice meal out... have dinner at friends houses who don’t eat the way we do... but most of the time we feel ill afterward... because our bodies are not used to the nitrates, preservatives, sugar, pesticides and transfats to name a few. I usually pay for it afterward... so when people say they eat a certain way, it may not be to JUDGE you... but maybe its because their body feels a whole better when they do... Now I do know as a Mom there are always people who are out there to one up another… and for that. …Well that’s a whole other blog… I totally getcha on that subject…” like my stroller costs 3,000! “ And I’m secretly thinking… well don’t brag about the fact that you got totally ripped off. Right? There are some things that other Moms do and say that drive me batty. Because I like you def don’t think there is one way to raise a child… period.
As for thinking one way is better when it comes to food, its truly not my opinion…. it just is better. Its just the way it is... organic is better. It goes through rigorous amounts of tests before it is released on the shelves and the FDA cant touch that... however. Not -organic food does not have to meet those requirements. It’s plain and simple. Our bodies were not meant to process hormones and trans-fats (which are fake fats are body cant even recognize)… these kinds of things amongst other things make our body work that much harder. And store many of the “unknown” toxins in our skin and tissues… because our bodies don’t even know what it is. This is one of the reasons degenerative disease is on the rise more now than ever… because the contaminants we are dealing with today are far worse than that our parents generation.
Now there is no way I would ever say so ignorantly that you in anyway cause your Childs sickness… some things are genetic... but eating organic can only help with our illnesses. Because instead of processing’s chemicals it can work to heal and restore cells. This is true for everyone… not just people who suffer from an illness. I also have a very strong belief in God and obviously if it is the Lords will he can heal. I can totally sympathize with you on this matter. As it is frustrating doing research and seeing conflicting evidence. When all you want is a black and white reality of what is best for your precious child. Its tough. And I am sorry that you have to deal with that, truly.
As for being a good steward. The way I look at it. Is "man" messed" up food with all of it chemicals and greed, trying to make more money and more produce faster... and because of that we don’t have the kosher food that God intended for us to have... God gave us manna and olive leaf and all sorts of good healthy natural remedies to use ... but man perverted another good thing he gave us. I think that eating healthy IS being a good steward of our funds because we are taking care of our bodies and the bodies of our children. I could also go on to say that there are many things in the American way of life… that I are not cohesive to being good stewards… what would God think of flat screens, fancy SUVs and true religion jeans? When there are starving children globally… I think this is where we need to ponder on stewardship. I am not saying nice things are a sin.... I am only saying when we become overcome by materials... and buy to keep up with the world around us..
My family also chooses to eat organic… because we know that our dollar is our vote… so if we continue to buy crap.. That is what the companies will continue to make… and if we demand better. That is what we will get. supply and demand at its best…I am so passionate about it… I've really been tempted to pass out flyers at grocery stores to educate people… because we shouldn’t have to live in a country that we have to weed through and meticulsly read labels to make sure we aren’t consuming poison. (And im not being dramatic about it… read the label of crest white strips if you don’t believe me).
Obviously I am passionate about this too. Or I wouldn’t be studying to be a Holistic Doctor in this arena. I feel like people are so mislead by our government. However. I do not JUDGE you and I would soooooooo come over to eat at your house. If you would still like me after this rant... :0
Much love. Girl. I respect your being passionate and writing about this. There is a whole lot to it. For sure.

I love my girlfriends, and that they're so passionate, and you both make very thought provoking arguments...I know where Amy's blog was coming from, and I love her for being strong enough to write it, and I agree with her on many, many points if not all of them. We all use our mama's guts to decide what's best for our children and ourselves...and I know that you used yours to decide what is best for your family. Much respect to you and to Amy. *Big arms around my girls in AZ and TX*
hi shauna. I am with you 100% with everything you said.
& for sure about the cow milk. I personally don't understand how the world buys into thinking we as adults need to drink the milk of another species. cows milk is for calves, period. says cindy the vegan. that is my two cents on that.
I enjoyed reading this post & just wanted to make a comment.
:-)
amen, enough said.
